| Description of the POI |
This ritual is intended as a temporary break from strict Lent rules, with the fire being a symbol of transition from winter (death) to spring (birth). Local youngsters build a high structure covered by dry leaves and plants, to which they then tie a puppet resemblig an old lady. The structure is then set on fire and, up until some years ago, ashes were brought to the house of the oldest lady in the village, as a wish for long life.
Rituale di metà Quaresima, che segna un momento di pausa dai rigori quaresimali, legato al fuoco e al momento di passaggio dall'inverno (morte apparente) alla primavera (rinascita). La compagnia dei giovani del paese costruisce una struttura di grandi dimensioni (medêli) che viene rivestita di materiali vegetali secchi, quali i fusti del mais, parti secche di vegetali. Viene creato un fantoccio che assomiglia ad una Vecja (vecchia) a cui si appicca il fuoco.
Al termine della combustione le braci venivano depositate sulla soglia di casa della donna più anziana del paese per augurarle lunga vita. Alcuni anni fa in paese la più anziana non gradiva questo gesto, cosicché da allora questa parte del rituale è stata interrotta. Il rituale è tramandato e realizzato dall'Associazione Culturale “Amici di Osais”. |

The “Amici di Osais” association works hard to preserve local traditions not as a display for tourists but more as a way to keep the immaterial patrimony of the community alive. This ritual is specific to this hamlet, Osais, and is not performed in neighbouring villages.
L'associazione degli “Amici di Osais” è custode di antiche tradizioni che mantiene vitali non con finalità turistica, ma come patrimonio immateriale per la comunità. Rappresenta un momento rituale complesso e laborioso (reperibilità del materiale in così grandi quantità e in un territorio che ha residui agricoli ridotti, fa sì che l'organizzazione richieda tempo e risorse). È percepito come un rituale che appartiene alla tradizione di Osais, non a quella della Val Pesarina in generale ed è uno dei pochi ancora a sopravvivere |
