POI BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Description of the POI
In ancient times, namely Cola Monforte’s age, this road was located in a countryside area, outside the city walls, called Contrada di Sant’Anello. It was farmland, with vegetable gardens and no buildings. In XIX century, in this road was installed a particular craftmanship activity, leather tanning. Tanneries used to be located not only outside the city walls, but also inside of them, and as it is widely known, leather tanning provokes unpleasant smells. Due to this problem, all tanneries were transferred outside the city walls, to what was then named as “Via delle concerie” or Road of the tanneries. This road was chosen because was slightly sloping. This condition allowed waste waters used in tanning processes to be poured in the road and to flow downhill to the vegetable gardens area in Fontana Vecchia. The road also have an inlet near the corner behind the church of Santa Maria della Croce, creating a small curve in this road. This particular condition allows aeriation and the wind swept away the smell caused by tanning activities. In 1875, the name of the road was changed, in order to celebrate Italian unification. Its new name was “Viale XX settembre”, or Boulevard 20th September. This road became extremely important and lively, as here were located most of the city businesses, up until mid-XX century. During the XX century, the name of the road was one more time changed to its current denomination, Via Marconi, to commemorate the famous Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi. In particular, from the seventeenth century here was the "Taverna del Procaccio", the place where the distribution of the local post took place but also the stop and the exchange of horses for those who carried the correspondence from Naples to Vasto. Until the early nineteenth century, the Procaccio (postman) arrived on Sunday evening and stopped in the tavern waiting to meet the next day the Procaccioli (local postmen) who received the mail to be distributed in neighboring countries.
