POI BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Description of the POI	Arriving from Val d’Incarojo, Chiaulis is the first hamlet of the Municipality. With only 30 inhabitants (approximately), has never been vehicle accessible and thus it can only be visited on foot, walking along pebble stone paths and staircases. One can really have the impression that time stood still here, with houses and stables for pigs one next to the other. Around the end of November/beginning of December, the hamlet inhabitants organize a festival cantered upon pork butchering activities, aimed at preserving them as well as at producing cured meats and sausages for the hamlet’s consumption. Considering that it is a very fascinating event also because the hamlet becomes very lively, it might become an interesting occasion for a cultural and culinary visit. Chiaulis è il primo borgo del Comune di Paularo che si incontra entrando nella vallata di Incarojo, seguendo alcuni tornanti che dipartono dalla strada provinciale 23. Il borgo, che oramai conta una trentina di abitanti, non è mai stato reso carrabile e anche per questo motivo sembra fermo nel tempo: è percorribile solo a piedi, su stradine acciottolate, rampe e scalinate che si dipanano tra le case, affiancate da stalle e ricoveri per l’allevamento dei maiali. Per questa sua caratteristica, regala scorci significativi e vedute suggestive che ammaliano il visitatore. In prossimità della festa di S. Andrea, che per tradizione sancisce l’uccisione del maiale di casa (“A sant’Andrea il purcit su la brea), nel piccolo borgo di Chiaulis si tiene una festa di paese che, attraverso laboratori e dimostrazioni, vuole salvare la memoria della lavorazione del maiale per la produzione di insaccati e tagli. Considerato il momento dell’anno così scenografico e la movimentazione insolita che la festa porta nel borgo, è un’interessante occasione di visita enogastronomica e culturale.

Type of tourist experience	Possibility to organize guided tours of the hamlet. If visiting during the festival, tourist could take part to pork butchers’ activities, both as viewers or as active participants. A shared lunch is the main event and it is of course pork-based. Visita al borgo con eventuali accompagnatori locali (da organizzare sulla base delle disponibilità). L’esperienza turistica potrebbe prevedere una mattinata di visita al borgo, immergendosi completamente nel contesto festivo e paesano dell’occasione. Si può poi seguire le dimostrazioni di norcineria, provando – se si vuole – a partecipare a qualche attività. Il pranzo, naturalmente a base di piatti tradizionali con l’inevitabile presenza della carne di maiale, corona la giornata.

Accessibility/limitations to access	Pebble-stone roads and staircases make the visit to the hamlet. extremely difficult for people with mobility issues. Le limitazioni all’accessibilità sono legate alla conformazione del borgo, che è interamente pedonale e presenta scale e rampe in ciottolato: le persone con difficoltà motorie difficilmente possono intraprendere questa esperienza di visita.

Information regarding the key informants and stakeholders involved in the research	While the festival is more a sharing moment among the villagers that a tourist-oriented initiative, it can still become an occasion for tourists and visitors to discover the hamlet and its traditions, of course showing respect for local specificities and for the organizers’ resources. La festa per il momento ha una forte valenza locale, ovvero è stata pensata non tanto come attività di richiamo turistico ma come momento di condivisione tra valligiani. I turisti sono in ogni caso i benvenuti, nel rispetto della specificità della situazione e delle possibilità organizzative dei volontari impegnati nella buona riuscita.
