POI BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Description of the POI
Tamburica or Tamboura refers to a family of long-necked lutes popular in Southern Europe and Central Europe especially in Croatia (of which it is the national string instrument). Its name and some characteristics are taken from the Persian tanbur but also resemble the mandolin and guitar in the sense that its strings are plucked and often paired. The frets may be moveable to allow the playing of various modes. The variety of tamburica shapes known today were developed in Serbia and Croatia by a number of indigenous contributors near the end of the 19th century.
Playing on the tambourines of the oldest and original Croatian two-part system, which was perfected by Milutin pl. Farkaš is named after him "Farkaš's system" or simply "Farkas tambourines". This type of tamburitza has almost completely disappeared in Croatia, so that there are only a few other ensembles in Croatia that keep this treasure. The value of this cultural treasure is evidenced by the fact that the Institute of Folklore in its edition of the original musical expression among the twenty examples from all over Croatia included as many as two recordings of the Tamburitza Society Zora from Adamovac! The Ministry of Culture has included them in the register of intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia, so they have the status of the bearer of this way of making music, which is part of the identity and recognizability of Croats. Tambourines are kept in the Prilišće Homeland Museum.
