POI BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Description of the POI The Solfatara of Predappio Alta is one of the oldest sulphurs mine in Romagna, documented since 1645. After various events, in the 1920s, logistical support and construction works (roads, power plants, cableway for the transport of the mineral) were carried out, probably driven by a propaganda and political interest rather than a justified economic interest. Despite the abundance of means and efforts, the results were disappointing and the Solfatara was abandoned in 1941. Today the Solfatara is managed by the Pro Loco di Predappio Alta which organizes every year a nativity scene inside the mine and uses the caves for maturing the Pecorino di Pienza cheese.
